That Which Follows is about lines and words that build by iteration, and is dedicated to flutist
Laura Lentz. It begins with a Canon with the piano first matching the flute’s line a quarter note later and a perfect fifth lower. After a few measures, the pianist’s left hand joins with an inversion of the flute’s original line at half speed. Spinner features a vigorous melody in the flute over rapid rotating patterns in the piano. A Crab Canon is a type of canon in which one part (in this case, the flutist) plays a line, while another part (in this case, the pianist’s left hand, octaves below) plays the same line in reverse. The pianist’s right hand also repeats a note throughout Crab Canon. In Spinneret, the flute’s line weaves with the piano’s descending figures to spin a web of pivoting harmonies. In Crab Cannon, carcinization comes to artillery and/or projectiles.
